The 38-year-old boxing athlete who qualified pre-quarters of the Tokyo Olympics is now hustling for the world championship that is going to be conducted in December.
Mary Kom will not compete in the upcoming National Women’s Boxing Championships in Hisar as she prepares for the world championships.
The BFI (Boxing Federation of India) announced that only gold medallists from the Nationals will be a part of the upcoming teams. It was reported that trials will be conducted for certain weight categories like the 48 kg category in which Mary Kom competes in preferably.
The championships in Hisar will be held on December 21.
Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain is directly selected for the nationals based on her fabulous performance at the Tokyo Olympics; however, she will also skip nationals.
A source from the BFI stated that Mary Kom has not yet competed since the Tokyo Olympics and she might have been a part of the nationals if the World Championships selection rounds didn’t come sooner.
The Women’s Boxing World Championships this year will be conducted in Istanbul in early December and the winning prize amounts to USD 2.6 million.
Mary Kom has won the World Amateur Boxing Championship six times and she is the first woman to win a medal in each of these championships. In April 2016, she was nominated as a member of the Rajya Sabha.
The movie based on Mary Kom in 2014 gained a massive viewership and Mary Kom became an inspiration for women.
