The production of Rust has come to a halt that was being directed by Joel Souza. Alec Baldwin is producing and starring in the film.
Authorities are investigating the case after confirming that a prop gun was misfired by actor Alec Baldwin, while shooting for the film, he killed the cinematographer and wounded the director.
The film was being shot at the southern outskirts of Santa Fe.
The sheriff’s department said that Haylna Hutchins (42) was airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital where she was pronounced dead by a healthcare professional.
The director, Joel Souza was taken in an ambulance to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center where he is recovering from his injuries.
A spokesperson for Baldwin stated that it was an accident on the set. It was a misfire of a prop gun with blanks but without a metal projectile, it can kill at a sufficient distance.
The International Cinematographers Guild confirmed it was Hutchins who died and the details are still unclear. John Lindley, the guild president and executive director Rebecca Rhine said that they are working on what happened and will support the investigation till the end.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reported that Alec Baldwin was seen on Thursday outside the sheriff’s department in tears but they couldn’t get a comment.
Haylna Hutchins graduated from American Film Institute in 2015. She worked as a cinematographer for the 2020 action film ‘Archenemy’ starring Joe Manganiello. She was also rewarded as a ‘rising star’ by American Cinematographer in 2019.
