This massive telescope is built by the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES).

The telescope has an aperture of 3.6m.

If you google the images you will see that it is located at a peak of 2.5km and the view from that hill is marvellous.

This telescope surpassed the ex- Asia’s largest telescope of Tamil Nadu at Kavalur which is of 2.3 diameters. It has been India’s biggest since 1986.

Not a lot of people know about this telescope but it has made pretty surprising discoveries in outer space like galaxies and far away stars. The telescope is situated inside of an immensely massive tomb that protects and supports it.

This might have been the biggest spectrograph that people have seen in India.

Spectrographs are used by Astronomers to study distant galaxies and sometimes even discover new ones, study black holes, cosmic explosions like gamma-ray bursts, supernovae bursts, massive stars, dwarf galaxies etc.

After the inauguration of this telescope, the Director of ARIES, Prof. Dipankar Banerjee said that building such a complex instrument in India is a significant step towards ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ in the area of astronomy and astrophysics.

How does DOT work?

This telescope is built to observe extremely faint and distant celestial objects.

It is made of special lenses and glasses that can produce smooth and accurate images of outer space.

Photons coming from distant celestial bodies are combined and sorted into different colours by the telescope. It is then finally converted into electronic recordable signals using an in-house CCD (Charge-Coupled Device).
