On Sunday, Narottam Mishra, home minister of Madhya Pradesh, in his recent mangalsutra campaign, issued a warning to designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee stating that if the designer in 24 hours does not take down the advertisement, Narottam will proceed with legal actions against him.
This kind of backlash is not a first for the celebrity designer because of his latest creation, as a legal notice has already been issued against him by a legal advisor of the BJP for Mukherjee’s Mangalsutra collection advertisement.
In a series of recent events a FabIndia’s advertisement ‘Jashn-e-Riwaaz’ received strong criticism; another example is Bollywood Actor Aamir Khan’s CEAT advertisement and an ad of Karwa Chauth showing a lesbian couple by Dabur.
In a video message, the Madhya Pradesh minister Narottam Mishra said that he had seen the mangalsutra advertisement and had found the advertisement very objectionable and also hurtful to religious sentiments. He further said that the black part of a mangalsutra symbolises Shiv while the yellow part represents Parvati. At last, he said that he had already raised the objections and is now warning Sabyasachi Mukherjee personally and giving him an ultimatum of 24 hours.
“Using semi-naked models for a mangalsutra advertisement is hurtful to religious sentiments and outrageous,” said the legal notice sent by Ashutosh Dubey, a legal advisor of BJP-Maharashtra Palghar unit.
