PM Modi said at the COP26 summit in Glasgow on Monday that the world’s response to the climate crisis must involve adaptations and not just mitigation.
In his 2 – minute speech, he said that mitigation has received a lot of significance but on the other hand adaptation has not received that significance. He then added that it is an injustice to the developing nations that are more affected by climate change. He said that the developing countries have to inculcate adaptation in their new policies and projects.
Continuing his speech, he talked about how climate is a big challenge for the agriculture sector that is prominent in developing countries like India. Climate change destroys the cropping patterns and then there are intense rain and floods that destroy the crops.
He listed how the Indian government projects have provided adaptation benefits to the people and also their quality of life. Some of the government projects he mentioned were Tapwater for all, Clean India Mission and Clean Cooking Fuel for all.
He then talked about the traditional communities of India and how they live in harmony with nature. He added that such practices must get proper attention in the adaptation policies of the country.
He then added that these policies and reforms must also be included in the school syllabi to educate the young about how they work and how they can be improved.
The focus of the COP26 conference became more worrisome with the failure of the Group 20 major industrial nations to agree on new commitments at the weekend summit in Rome as they made very limited commitments.
