On Monday, the chairman and managing director of Narayana Nethralaya, Dr Bhujang Shetty, said that it was the first such case in which one person’s eyes has provided eyesight to four people. Kannada film industry’s “Power Star” (Puneeth Rajkumar) donated his eyes after following his father, Dr Rajkumar’s steps and his mother, Parvathamma. Dr Shetty also stated that the transplant was possible with the help of advanced techniques.
While in talks with the media person Dr Bhujang Shetty also stated that Puneeth’s family tried best even in this crucial time to donate the eyes of Late Actor Puneeth Rajkumar. The eyes were collected the very same day Puneeth died and were transplanted on the very next day. In normal cases eyes of a person gives eyesight to two people, but Puneeth’s case was different as the doctors were able to transplant the eye to four people.
Shetty further elaborated on explaining the technology that the uniqueness of this case was that they used each eye to treat two patients by separating the deeper and superior layers of the cornea. The superior layer of the cornea was donated to two patients suffering from superficial corneal disease. In contrast, the deeper layer of the cornea was transplanted to patients with deep layer corneal disease. He also stated that this kind of transplant was not brought out in Karnataka state as to the best of his knowledge.
This transplant was carried out under the supervision of Dr Rohit Shetty by Dr Harsha Nagaraj, Dr Sharon D’Souza and Yathish Shivanna, supported by the rest of the cornea transplant team.
