Labourer dies by suicide after the landowner rapes her and fled the spot.

In Surendranagar district in a village in Wadhwan Taluka, an agricultural laborer died by suicide on Tuesday after the landowner raped her.

The accused, Yuvrajsinh Parmar, is the owner of 30 bigha land in the village of Wadhwan Taluka, sought sexual favors from the laborer who worked on the field as a share-cropper. The landowner beat up the woman with a stick when she resisted this act and even threatened to kill her and the woman’s three-year-old son before raping the woman. Later the accused, Yuvrajsinh Parmar, fled the spot.

On Wednesday, an officer of Surendranagar district police, while referring to an FIR registered by the woman’s husband, stated that the 30-year-old woman attempted suicide on the field itself; she told her husband everything about what happened when the husband returned.

The police official further stated that the husband took the 30-year-old to hospital, where she was declared dead while undergoing treatment.

The laborer couple was engaged by Parmar for cultivating his land and, in return, would get a 25 percent share of the cultivated crop, said the police.

Police said that Parmar lives on the outskirts of Rajkot city; Parmar was sexually harassing the 30-year-old for the past few days and has been booked for rape, criminal assault, abetment to suicide and criminal intimidation.

A police officer investigating the case stated that the accused is on the run, but the police team is trying their best to find the culprit.
