With excessive pressure building on the government as the petrol and diesel rates are rising every day. The Central government decided to cut excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 10 respectively to bring down the rates.
With the excise duty cut down, the current rate of Delhi’s petrol will be Rs 105.04 that was Rs. 110.04 per litre before and the diesel rate is decreased to Rs 88.42 from Rs 98.42.
The finance ministry in a statement had announced the same.
This is noted as the highest ever reduction in excise duty after the rise in taxes came into effect between March 2020 and May 2020 to avoid consumers suffering from the sharp fall of international oil prices.
State government charges local sales tax (VAT) along with the excise duty, so if the states reduce the VAT amount, consumers will see a greater fall in prices.
Many states and cities have seen a fall in petrol and diesel prices after the state governments decided not to levy VAT on it.
