On Friday, 5 November, a known television personality, retired international cricketer, and Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu addressed the media in Chandigarh, stating that he has withdrawn his resignation as Punjab Congress Chief according to the report of news agency ANI.
The well-known Punjab Congress chief had resigned from his position as the president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (Punjab PCC) on 28 September and sent the letter to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) chief Sonia Gandhi announcing his resignation.
In this letter of resignation, Sidhu wrote that the collapse of man’s characters stems from the compromise corner and that he can never compromise on the future of Punjab and its agenda for the welfare of Punjab, and thus, he resigns as the president of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee.
While addressing the press conference, Sidhu stated that he would assume charge when a new Attorney General (AG) is appointed. He further stated that the posts do not matter, but what matters is the path of truth.
The reason behind Sidhu’s resignation was that the Congress government was appointing senior advocate APS Deol as their Attorney General, which led the Congress government to come under fire from the opposition. Deol was recently counsel for former DGP Sumedh Singh Saini, who was police chief during the incidents of police firing on protesters and sacrilege. APS Deol successfully bailed him out in four cases filed by the Punjab Police.
It was seen as contradictory to the government’s resolve to punish those behind police firing on protesters at Behbal Kalan, during which two protesters were killed. It was claimed by Sidhu’s supporters that this move miffed him.
On Friday, Sidhu, while speaking to the media persons, said that the DGP and the AG are two important officials who could take the Bargari sacrilege and drugs issues to a logical conclusion.
