If you know about the world’s biggest potato, then you might have some new information in your hand.
Colin and Craig of New Zealand were cleaning their garden when they came across something so big below the soil’s surface. As the couple start digging to see what it is, Colin thought that it might be some sort of a fungus growing. He then scratched a bit of its skin and tasted it – IT WAS A POTATO.
Craig was so shocked seeing a potato this big. It didn’t exactly look like a potato but something like an ugly, mutant she described. This may be the world’s largest potato that weighs around 7.9 kg (17.4 pounds) which is almost equal to one small dog.
After they found out about this potato on Aug 30, the potato has become a sort of celebrity in the small town near Hamilton. Craig and Colin named the potato Doug after the way it was discovered and then made a small cart to tow it around.
If this isn’t weird enough, keep reading, Colin said in an interview that they treated the potato like a living thing by putting a hat on him, taking him for walks, and also put him on social media.
The Guinness World Records entry for the heaviest potato in the world is recorded as less than 5 kg. The couple stated that they have applied to Guinness about this discovery and are waiting for a reply from them. Guinness on the other hand said that they can’t share any details about it for now and the 2011 potato is the record holder for now.
When Colin was asked about his secret gardening tips, he said that they don’t have any. They just throw cow manure and straw in their garden and see nature’s magic. He said that this might be one of those magical surprises of mother earth. He also added that they have been growing cucumbers where they used to grow potatoes before as a lot of weed spread in that area.
Potatoes are living beings, and in a few days they started to lose weight and moulds started to come out. The couple were not done with Doug yet so they kept it in a freezer.
Colin said he might use Doug to make potato vodka. Quite interesting, eh?
