Instagram introduces new feature ‘Take a Break’

Instagram recently announced a new feature ‘Take a break’ that is still in its testing phase. Facebook, now Meta owned platform is testing a feature that will let users take a break from scrolling.

This feature will notify the users if they have been spending too much time on the platform. Instagram’s Head Adam Mosseri said that this feature might come out sometime in December. Currently, it is being tested with some users.

The main concept behind ‘take a break’ is a short social media detox that notifies you to get away from the app when you are spending too much time in it. The timestamps include 10, 20 and 30 minutes. The users can switch the feature off if they don’t want the feature to function.

On the other hand, some apps are trying to keep their audience hooked to their platforms as much as they can and Instagram is doing the complete opposite which is quite a big step.

Instagram stated that they worked with 3rd party experts to gather information and advice about how this feature should work. Some suggestions were given for this feature like taking deep breaths, listening to your favourite song, writing your thoughts or doing something from your to-do lists. Adam further added that this feature will be a part of a broader plan to try and give people more control over their social media by providing such tools to users.

There are many smartphones nowadays that have screentime limit tools that let users manage their screen time. Such apps show how much you have been using your phone and how are you doing with your screen time limits. Such applications and tools are a great way to monitor our screen time not just for social media but for other things as well. People who are in a desk job will surely limits, for them, screen time limits don’t work but taking frequent breaks is something they can do to give their eyes some rest, some apps remind you to take a break!
