Majority of young Indians still consider ‘looks’ first on a matrimonial profile, survey finds

No matter how much you preach – a person should be beautiful by heart, the maximum percentage of people first see how they look before they look at their hearts. If you think about it, it is always the face that comes first and then the conversations. A similar pattern goes by when young Indians are sifting through profiles on matrimonial sites.

A recent survey by Betterhalf.ai tells that Indians still consider looks while they are checking out profiles on matrimony sites. The survey suggests that 43% of single Indians out of 286 participants consider ‘looks’ while choosing a profile.

The other 22% consider age, 19% consider profession and 16% consider the prospective partner’s salary package. Pawan Gupta of Betterhald.ai talked about the survey findings stating that ‘looks’ don’t particularly mean looks but also how the profile is built, what pictures are put in it.

Dating apps also work the same way, doesn’t it? You take a look at their profile and check out who they are as a person.

Another very important criterion in matrimonial websites profile selection is the profession and the salary offered in it. A lot of people check that before checking about their community, culture, religion etc. In the survey, 58% of them believe that profession and salary are not the primary factors to choose while 42% of them believe it is important.

The higher percentage is prevalent because of the Indian mentality that is broadly based on choosing the partner from a particular, religion, caste, creed but the percentage could have been quite higher. The urban population are slowly moving towards approaching marriage and relationships based on compatibility rather than the outdated match-making process.

Match-making is a whole trial and error process where looks can deceive after you meet each other physically. At that moment you understand that it is the personality that holds more importance than a couple of good pictures on a website. People who try to show off themselves on these sites can be people who are not as happy and beautiful as they show.
