Winter Session chill: Congress, TMC in Opposition boycott of Constitution Day event today

The opposition party is all set for a stormy Winter Session of Parliament from Monday. Opposition parties like the Congress and TMC have decided to boycott the Constitution Day event today that is going to be addressed by President Ram Nath Kovind in the Central Hall of Parliament Friday.

This decision came after Congress reached out to other opposition parties to come together for this move in Parliament. Some other opposition parties that are expected to be a part of the movement are RJD, DMK and the left.

On Thursday, Sonia Gandhi chaired the meeting of the Congress parliamentary strategy group. Some leaders talked about Trinamool’s aggressive poaching of its leaders. The leaders stated that Congress should reach out to all parties, indicating that political developments outside the Parliament must not interfere with the floor coordination.

The idea behind the move is to ensure that the Opposition parties are in unity in Parliament and hold a common view on certain issues. The meeting chaired by Sonia Gandhi also identified the issues that need to be raised in the House; the issues also include the repeal of the 3 controversial farm laws on the first working day of the winter session.

On Constitution Day, there was an agreement at the meeting that the parties should boycott the event. Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Choudhary said that they won’t participate in the November 26 event as the ruling government doesn’t believe in democracy. He also stated that the Leader of the opposition wasn’t even invited to the event. The office of opposition is also an institution and the government doesn’t respect that, he added.
