Will Develop Booster Shot For New Covid Variant ‘Omicron’, Says Moderna

COVID 19 has a new variant that has been making the headlines for the past few days. The US pharmaceutical company Moderna has announced that they will develop a booster shot for the new ‘Omnicron’ variant.

The new variant was first detected in South Africa and it got the name ‘Omnicron’ by the WHO (World Health Organization) advisory board under its Greek-letter system. Talking about the new booster shot against the new variant, Moderna said that they will develop a higher dose of the existing vaccine. Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel said that they are working on the booster shot as fast as possible.

The information about a new booster shot for the Omnicron variant was announced by Moderna on Twitter. They also announced their 3 – step strategy to address the new variant.

In the 3 step strategy, the booster dose is currently authorised for 50 µg of mRNA – 1273. It has been proven insufficient against the Omnicron variant.

Moderna has already started testing the booster shot on adults. They have tested it on 306 individuals. Moderna will rapidly work on the Omnicron specific booster candidate. It is part of the Company’s strategy to bring a solution for the COVID 19 variant that has the maximum number of mutations to date.

Bancel also said that Moderna is constantly working towards enhancing the vaccine as it has become extremely important to be proactive with the evolving virus. He stated that they have evaluated the booster dose, they are studying the 2 multi-valent booster candidates and they are also working on the Omnicron specific booster candidate.

Omnicron virus was detected first in Botswana, South Africa after which the central government issued a notice for all passengers flying to South Africa and coming from there to be on high alert. Check the full story here.
