Shashi Tharoor Quits Sansad TV Show Over Opposition MPs Suspension In Rajya Sabha

Congress Lok Sabha MP and writer Shashi Tharoor stepped down as a host of a talk show to be telecasted on Sansad TV today. He stepped down to protest against the suspension of the 12 Opposition MPs from the Rajya Sabha.

In a statement, Tharoor said that he will not host the talk show ‘To the point’ of Sansad TV to protest against the suspension of 12 Members of Parliament arbitrarily for actions they committed in the monsoon session.

He further said that the step he took because he was ‘concerned that his involvement in hosting a show on Sansad TV will make him a part of undemocratic processes in which the Parliamentary institutions are being run.

He said that Sansad TV itself has been the problem because when adverse comments were made by many, the cameras focused on Treasury benches and ignored the Opposition. He further added that a Parliamentary TV channel must reflect the diversity and not whitewash how the Parliament works.

Before Shashi Tharoor stepped down from Sansad TV, MP Priyanka Chaturvedi stepped down as an anchor for the show ‘Meri Kahani’. She is a Shiv Sena MP. Priyanka Chaturvedi wrote a letter to Vice President M Venkiah Naidu that she is stepping down as an anchor for the show.

12 MPs were suspended from attending the current Winter Session that includes 6 MPs from the Congress, 2 each from TMC and Shiv Sena and 1 each from CPI (M) and CPI. The MPs are holding protests in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue every day inside the Parliamentary complex. They have decided to do it until the suspension is revoked.

Sansad TV was set up to merge the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha TV. It was launched by PM Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Vice President M Venkiah Naidu in September.
