Ajay Lalwani, a visually impaired cyclist who is cycling 7,500 Kms across India to raise awareness about road safety. He aims to cover 12 states across India’s roads. He said in an interview that for him it is all about setting new records.
He began his journey from Gateway of India, Mumbai on November 15, 2021, at 4 am. He aims to travel to Srinagar first, then Kanyakumari and then back to Mumbai that will cover 12 states over 45 days. 25-year-old Ajay Lalwani has bagged 2 world records by his side. He set world records in blind cycling from Mumbai-Goa-Mumbai and Dadar-Gondia-Dadar and now he wants to accomplish the Blind Cycling Expedition 2021.
In the interview, he mentioned that every year he likes to take on a new challenge. When he got to know about the expedition, he didn’t want to miss it and thought that creating awareness for road safety promoted by a visually impaired person will send a powerful message. Lalwani is sponsored by Philips Lighting and he is accompanied by an independent 18 member team (in cars) that include navigation coordinators, photographers, chefs etc.
He further added in an interview with Indian Express that every visually impaired person wants to live, dream and give their best to something, however the technical and moral support for people with disabilities is lacking in the country. He said that he was rejected by many sponsors for the expedition.
Ajay Lalwani is born in Thane’s Ulhas Nagar who slowly started to lose his vision in his childhood and now he is 100% blind. He has won several medals at national levels para-sports like Judo and Kabaddi. His 18 member team take turns in every 4 hours to help him with navigation like directions, cycle speed and avoiding accidents.
He and his squad are on the roads for 15 hours with a 3-4 hours break in between for breakfast, lunch and tea. His diet includes breakfast – eggs, paneer, sprouts (9.30 am), lunch – rice, vegetables, fruit juices/fruits along with 6 to 8 litres of water every day. He stops riding around 7 pm or 8 pm and finishes his dinner at 9 pm. He sleeps in tents or any accommodation arranged by the sponsors.
He also added he wants to become the first visually impaired person to climb Mount Everest.
