Meet Leena Nair, Chanel’s new Indian-origin Global CEO

It’s the year of Indian-origin CEO’s getting famous worldwide. Sundar Pichai of Google, Satya Nadella of Microsoft, and much recently Parag Agrawal of Twitter, Indians are shining bright in the American world.

Leena Nair is now Chanel’s new Global CEO. She is also the first female and youngest-ever CHRO (Chief Human Resources Officer) at FMCG major Unilever. She stepped down from Unilever to join the French luxury fashion group, Chanel. She will be working from London.

Unilever made it official in a statement that Leena Nair had decided to leave the company in January 2022 to pursue a new career opportunity as Global CEO at Chanel.

Who is Leena Nair?

Leena Nair has been with Unilever for 30 years. She started her career in the company in 1992 as a management trainee and then she was the Factory Personnel Manager of Lipton India from 1993-96, Employee Relations Manager at HUL from 1996-97, Management Development Planning Manager of HUL from 1997-2000, HR Manager of Home and Personal Care India from 2003-04, General Manager HR of Home and Personal Care India and General Manager of HR IND in 2006, according to her LinkedIn profile.

She was General Manager of HPC and Foods and Head of Management Development from August 2006-May 2007, she has also assumed roles as Executive Director at HUL, Human Resources VP.

Her philosophy as an HR Manager was that she took initiatives like forming a four-pillar wellbeing framework to address the mental, physical, emotional and overall wellbeing of employees in 2014. She believes that employees’ well-being is the core of any organisation’s success.

During her time in Unilever, the company gave their employees a day off to thank them for their services even in the testing times of the COVID 19 pandemic under the 2020 Global Day of Thanks. “Today at Unilever, there will be no team calls, no emails, no work for many of us. Those that can’t take today because they are keeping things running will be given an additional day off before the end of 2020,” she said in a LinkedIn post.

She is from Kolhapur, Maharashtra and had completed her schooling at Holy Cross Convent High School in Kolhapur.
