There has been a lot of worry surrounding the new variant and COVID 19 cases have started surging in India. The Omicron led the third wave has already reached its peak in metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata as predicted by IIT’s Sutra model on COVID 19. Since the past few days, these metro cities are observing a significant drop in the number of daily cases.
On the other hand, an SBI report states that India’s 3rd COVID wave will come in 2-3 weeks if districts such as Bengaluru, Pune see a rise of new cases.
Dr Soumya Kanti Ghosh who is a chief economic advisor said that with 20,971 cases in Mumbai, a peak is achieved and since then the number of cases has been stabilized in Mumbai.
The IIT professor who is behind the Sutra Model, Mr Maninder Agarwal said that for India the country will see its peak on January 23 where the daily caseload is maybe 7.2 lakh. Today, India reported 2.38 lakh cases while the Omicron tally crossed 8.9k infections.

As we can see, Delhi and Mumbai have seen a huge fall in cases in the past 2 days. Mumbai’s daily cases fell below 10,000 for the first time this month and Delhi is also seeing a constant fall of cases since January 13.
There are speculations as to why there is a sudden shift of COVID 19 cases trajectories, Mr Maninder said that first, he thought it was due to the latest ICMR guidelines of testing but that is not the case. There are two reasons as to why the cases are dropping, the virus has spread enough among the group who are less immune and saturated or people have stopped testing for COVID as the infection has mild symptoms are people are treating it at home itself.
