In a shocking turn of events, Sania Mirza announced her retirement from professional tennis on Tuesday. Mirza took this decision after she lost in the first round of Australian Open 2022 in the doubles event.
Sania Mirza is one of the best and most decorated tennis players representing India. While announcing her retirement, Mirza said “I’ve decided this will be my last season. I’m taking it week by week, not sure if I can last the season, but I want to,”.
In the Australian Open, Mirza and her Ukrainian partner Nadiia Kichenok lost 4-6 6-7 (5) to the Slovenian team of Tamara Zidansek and Kaja Juvan in one hour and 37 minutes.
Mirza and Rohan Bopanna are still in the tournament as they are now preparing to play mixed doubles in the Australian Open grand slam.
Sania Mirza has been a talented and consistent tennis player. The Hyderabad girl has been playing tennis since 2003 and it has been 19 glorious years of her career. Being the world’s no. 1 in doubles and winning 6 grand slams has been one of the biggest achievements of her career till now. She has also been the highest-ranking female player for India in mid-2007 when her singles career shined bright.
Mirza is one of the only two female tennis players from India to win a WTA title and the only one to reach the top 100 of singles rankings.
