Dr Prateek Sharma in an interaction told TOI that it is no longer a western disease. According to various studies and research, 20 – 30% of Indians suffer from acidity and GERD symptoms.
Causes of Acid Reflux
Some of the common causes of acid reflux are obesity, eating junk food, low fibre food, alcohol, excess caffeine, medicines, stress, insufficient sleep etc.
Sometimes acid reflux is caused by side effects of medicines.
Can it be treated with lifestyle changes or medicines?
There are various medicines available for acidity that gives you instant relief but it also gives you hunger pangs. Some other ways you can avoid acidity is by eating slowly, chewing your food properly and sleeping after 3-4 hours of eating your dinner. Try to stay away from painkillers, smoking, and alcohol and exercise as much as you can. Yoga, aerobics, swimming, cycling, gymming are some of the best ways to lose weight.
Eating a well-balanced diet can also ensure that you don’t have acidity at all. If possible, opt for a low carb diet.
You must not wear tight clothes or tight belts if you are suffering from acid reflux as it can trigger acidity and make you uncomfortable. Many experts suggest that you must not sleep immediately after eating; it keeps your stomach awake even when you are resting that triggers acidity swiftly.
