On Tuesday, opposition members disrupted Lok Sabha proceedings by holding vocal demonstrations against rising fuel prices and other concerns, causing the House to postpone twice in a row.
As soon as the House convened at 11 a.m., Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and DMK’s TR Baalu sought a debate on the 13th increase in gasoline prices in the previous two weeks.
As Speaker Om Birla continued with Question Hour, members of the Congress, DMK, Trinamool Congress, and Left parties flooded the House well and chanted anti-Modi chants. Members of the Shiv Sena and the NCP also joined the opposition protests.
TRS members were also in the Well of the House, brandishing banners and addressing the issue of Telangana’s paddy procurement.
As the protests persisted, the Speaker postponed the meeting until 12 p.m.
When the House reconvened at midday, similar occurrences were seen. As BJP member Rajendra Agarwal, who was in the chair, began the Zero Hour, opposition members were once again in the Well of the House, chanting shouts asking that the gasoline price rise be reversed.
As opposition protests persisted, Mr Agarwal delayed the Lok Sabha sessions till 2 p.m.
Petrol and diesel prices were raised by 80 paise per litre on Tuesday, bringing the total rise in rates over the previous two weeks to 9.20 per litre.
This is the 13th price rise since the end of a four-and-a-half-month rate review hiatus on March 22.
