The idea of observing earth day came after several challenges like pollution and smog posing a threat to the environment and damaging it. In the 1970s, Earth Day was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson to promote ecology and raise awareness of the concerns surrounding the earth.

Gaylord Nelson was worried about the deteriorating condition of the planet. To take a step forward to save the planet, he gathered students to protest energy to raise awareness about air and water pollution. He was one of the many who was concerned about the massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California during that time.
