Every year, on April 22 – International Mother Earth Day is celebrated. This day is observed to create awareness about the extensive increase in pollution and other activities which are harming the environment directly or indirectly destroying the planet.
Why is it celebrated on April 22?
The idea of observing earth day came after several challenges like pollution and smog posing a threat to the environment and damaging it. In the 1970s, Earth Day was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson to promote ecology and raise awareness of the concerns surrounding the earth.
Gaylord Nelson was worried about the deteriorating condition of the planet. To take a step forward to save the planet, he gathered students to protest energy to raise awareness about air and water pollution. He was one of the many who was concerned about the massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California during that time.
On the first Earth Day, 20 million people hit the streets across various cities to protest against the impacts of 150 years of industrial development which had left a growing legacy of serious human health impacts.
Theme of Earth Day 2022
This year, the theme of Earth day is ‘invest in our planet’ urging businesses to shift towards sustainability. The UN is also celebrating Earth Day with the theme, ‘Harmony with Nature’.
